Re-pointing will always be something needed a some point due to the exposure to the Wind and Rain and add in a bit of Heat and Freezing and eventually the water will get in between the mortar. This will cause the chimney to come apart and can start to drop bits onto the tiles and block the gutters, fixing early signs of erosion will help prevent more issues further down the line.
